Archived Show Diary
Sunday, 2/23/2003, at the COVE in Roselle, NJ, with the Dysfunctional Youth, Void Control, Speed Crazy, The Dead Heros, and Friction Faction.
Wow, was this my first show for 03? Shit, I guess it was. Well, playing the Cove again after all these years was wierd. they've removed the lizard murals from the walls, the diner up the street where we all used to cause havoc is no longer 24 hours, but on a happy note, no more dickhead bouncers, only a sign that says "Mosh at your own RISK!!" (Now THAT was refreshing, for those of you that, like me, used to frequent that place) I came back up to NJ without the Nashville backup band (I've yet to have them onstage with me), but Coe on Bass (Old Faithful, that boy), Mike Vanity on Guitar, and my fellow Squiggy alumnus Joe Sabina learned a full set of my shit in two practices, one the day of show. Mike had to bail last minute due to car trouble. We went over real well, but it wasn't the same without you, Mikie.....Anyway, we had to play "Take This Job and Shove It", of course, in Tribute to the recently departed Johnny Paycheck, and that went over great. Note to self, always play Working Class drinking tunes when I hit NJ. On to the other bands: Friction Faction was insane; that's some serious energy those chicks (and the token dude on drums) have. Gotta hear more. Void Control, as always, ruled. As for the Dead Heros, this is the first of their shows where I finally cought their set, and I must say, that demo doesn't do the live set a BIT of justice. Outstanding performance. Speed Crazy? Wow. Well, I've never seen them when they didn't rock, but the highlight of the whole show for me was watching Erica smack the Hell out of that Stand-Up and do us a Rockabilly version of one of the greatest Punk Songs of all time, "Borstal Breakout" by Sham 69. VERY creative. The Dysfunctional Youth headlined. They were one of the first NJ Punk bands I REALLY got into when I was 13. I haven't seen them since 1998 when I played alongside them with the Oi! Scouts in NYC. Can they still jam? Truth be told, I don't know if I liked them better then, or now. It's different; good, but different. I guess better, because they did some oldies but goodies, and if I'm gonna judge by "Today's Youth", it was WAY heavier then it used to be, with the same Circle-Pit inspiring beat. Yeah, Dysfunctional Youth still rock out. The only sad point was when all the drama happend at the end. Well, here's the Cove. Ressurected BRIEFLY, and gone again; doesn't look like a venue for Streetpunk. Oh well, long live the Cove.
Saturday, 12/21/2002, GUIDO'S PIZZA, West End Nashville.
Well, we played a lot better than the Punkfest, so I was more pleased with ourselves. Brian and Coe helping me out once again, but no Mike this time. Captivated Krysti's Dad with a Merle Haggard cover. Got an offer to go on TV. Went bowling with a mob of Punks afterward. Could've been much worse!
MUSIC CITY PUNKFEST, Friday, 12/20/2002 at the MUSE, 835 4th Ave, Nashville, TN
with Random Conflict, the Pints, Criminals of November, Moral Decay, Revolt & Reject, and many others.
Well, what can I say? I think I'll open this with our set SUCKED. The sound was all out of whack, and having been an audience member, I can say they cranked the sound up way too much for the combo of a club that size and having no drum monitor, so we were all over the place. Surprisingly, though, when we got off the stage we were pounded with fanfare; I wanted to be like, "What the Hell is wrong with you people?! That was a train wreck!" but I guess I should be happy. Thanks to Nashville's Punk Rock community for the support. Anyway, Coe came down from NJ to play bass with me, and with who else but Brian Ramsey, my fellow Squiggy alumnus and current (as well as founding) Broken Heroes drummer to beat the sticks for me. Also, as an added treat, we had Mike Slusser, the finest mandolin picker I've heard yet in Nashville picking with us. Alas, I forgot to get a camera, sadly, because the crowd was moving thoroughly, and it would have looked great on the site here. We had flock of Punks on stage singing along to "Steel Reserve", yet another sign of the great support I've been getting in Nashville. To top that off, it was my first encounter with Casey and them rowdy Knoxville Punks; I certainly enjoyed THAT (we'll have to do it again sometime, boys!) As for the other bands, well, Moral Decay, The Pints, and Revolt N Reject were great, but I didn't catch much of the other bands due to either Police crap outside or misbehaved babies causing fights and drama. Nonetheless, big ups to Crash and Logan from the Muse for running quite a decent place to play, and a big thanks to Dizzy and Spooks of the Pints for giving me the pleasure of playing MC Punkfest 2002. P.S. Thanks to Bill for trecking 700+ miles just to come support.
Saturday, 8/24/02 at Drumsticks (240 Dayton Ave in Clifton, NJ) with NJ Oi! legends the Broken Heroes, and Mike Blank and the S.T.A.B.S.
Good night. The Stage Act for my set consisted of just me with Coe on bass at first, but my old buddy Chad Blank decided to sit in on the drums and followed along just fine. The crowd's response was great. Thanks to Brian Coe and Chad Blank for the backup, as well as Froggy for slapping me on the bill, not to mention Wop Mike and Krysti for coming out to support. As for the other bands, Mike Blank and the STABS were badass; not a bad comeback from the Blanks 77 Alumni. And what can I say about the Broken Heroes? THAT was an itch I've needed to scratch for awhile. Fantastic set.
7/19/02 at the M&M Hall in Old Bridge, NJ (153 Texas Rd. off of Rt. 9) with the Insubordinates, the Boils, Burning Sac of Midgets, Void Control, the Insults, the Aborted, and the Ruckus.
This was my first show in NJ since I moved to Nashville. I was glad to do it too, because all my old buddies up here got to meet my hot little Southern beauty, Krysti! Anyway, onto the show. Well, I showed up late although I was going to help out with security (sorry, Sloth) but everything worked itself out quite well anyway. Now as for my set? Well, the crowd's response to my limited six song set was amazing, considering the stage line up for me that night was just me and the old guitar, and the circle pits had to stop for 20 minutes and the kids just listen. I was bombarded with compliments and business cards for underground record labels afterward. It went over WAY better than I'd anticipated. Now as for the rest of the bands, they were all pretty badass, especially the Aborted from California and my old buddies Void Control from South Jersey, although the Insubordinates cancelled and that sucked. Big ups for all the kids who trecked an hour from Sussex County (there were many), and Dee for cartin' my ass up here. God Bless and all the best to Sue and Sloth for another fine jamboree at M&M Hall!
